Acrylic and mirrored acrylic panels are fast becoming popular choices for decorative cladding in both residential and commercial settings. Their lightweight, durable, and modern look makes them ideal for a wide range of applications – from feature walls to splashbacks, signage, and even retail displays.
If you're planning to install acrylic or mirrored acrylic sheets as cladding, it’s important to follow the correct application methods to ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to apply these panels to various surfaces using either 3M double-sided tape (available on our store) or neutral cure silicone.
What You'll Need
Before you begin, make sure you have the following on hand:
- Acrylic or mirrored acrylic panels (cut to size)
- 3M double-sided tape (available at Wholesale Acrylic Panels)
- OR a non-acidic, neutral cure silicone adhesive
- Isopropyl alcohol or a suitable surface cleaner
- Microfibre cloth
- Masking tape (optional for positioning)
- Soft gloves to prevent fingerprints or scratches
Surface Preparation
Proper preparation is crucial. The surface should be:
-
Clean – Free of dust, oil, and debris.
-
Dry – Moisture can affect adhesive performance.
- Flat and smooth – Uneven surfaces may result in poor adhesion or a warped appearance.
Wipe down both the back of the panel and the surface you're applying to with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow everything to dry completely before proceeding.
Method 1: Using 3M Double-Sided Tape
3M double-sided tape is a fast, clean, and easy way to apply acrylic cladding with minimal fuss. It's especially useful for temporary or non-permanent installations.
Steps:
-
Apply the Tape
Affix strips of 3M tape around the perimeter of the back of the acrylic panel and a few lines across the centre for extra hold.
-
Position the Panel
Carefully align the panel using masking tape as a guide, if necessary. Peel the backing off the tape just before pressing into place.
-
Press Firmly
Starting from one edge, press the panel onto the surface, applying even pressure across the whole sheet to ensure a strong bond.
Tip: For mirrored acrylic, extra care should be taken to ensure full adhesion to avoid any visual distortion.
Method 2: Using Neutral Cure Silicone
Neutral cure silicone is ideal for more permanent installations or when cladding onto slightly uneven surfaces. Be sure to use a non-acidic, neutral cure variety to avoid damaging the acrylic.
Steps:
-
Apply the Silicone
Apply generous dabs or beads of silicone to the back of the panel, spaced every 15–20 cm. Avoid applying too close to the edges to prevent seepage.
-
Position the Panel
Align the panel and press gently into place.
-
Secure While Curing
Use masking tape or temporary bracing to hold the panel in position while the silicone cures (usually 24–48 hours, depending on the product).
Final Tips
- Always wear soft gloves to avoid marks or scratches during installation.
- Remove protective film after installation to prevent damage.
- For mirrored acrylic, ensure the adhesive does not contain solvents that can degrade the mirror backing.
